What are the building regulations for skylight installations in the UK?
  • Skylight installations in the UK must comply with Part L of building regulations, which governs energy efficiency, and Part B, which covers fire safety. Always consult with a professional to ensure compliance.

Are skylights energy-efficient?
  • Yes, modern skylights are designed with energy efficiency in mind. Features such as insulated glazing, low-E coatings, and thermal breaks reduce heat transfer, improving insulation. Pairing skylights with energy-efficient upstands can further enhance thermal performance, reducing energy consumption.

How do I choose the right skylight for my roof?
  • Consider your roof type (flat or pitched), your goals (natural light, ventilation, or both), and the size of the space. For flat roofs, flat roof skylights are ideal, while pitched roof skylights work well on sloped surfaces. Energy efficiency and aesthetic preferences should also factor into your decision.

How much natural light will a skylight add to my space?
  • Skylights can significantly increase natural light, with even a small skylight brightening up dark rooms. The exact amount of light depends on the size of the skylight, roof orientation, and the position in the room. For maximum light distribution, consider larger or multiple skylights in bigger rooms.

What is a skylight upstand and why do I need one?
  • A skylight upstand is a raised frame that provides support and insulation between the skylight and the roof. It helps prevent leaks and improves energy efficiency, especially in flat roof installations.

How do I maintain my skylight?
  • Regular cleaning of the glass and inspection of seals and flashing will help maintain your skylight’s performance. Additionally, scheduling professional maintenance checks ensures the skylight remains leak-proof and energy-efficient over time.

What are the benefits of skylights with blinds?
  • Skylight blinds allow you to control the amount of natural light entering a room, providing privacy and reducing glare. They also help regulate temperature by minimizing solar heat gain during summer and retaining warmth during winter.

Can skylights help with ventilation?
  • Yes, many skylights can be opened to provide ventilation. Ventilating skylights, such as electric or manual opening models, allow for fresh air to flow, reducing humidity and improving air quality.

How do skylights perform in the UK's rainy climate?
  • Modern skylights are designed with advanced waterproofing and drainage systems to prevent leaks in rainy climates like the UK. Proper installation, along with features like insulated upstands, ensures weatherproof performance.
