I can tell you that skylights can indeed add value to a home, but it largely depends on the type of roof and the quality of installation. Different types of roofs can accommodate skylights differently.

For instance, if you have a pitched or sloped roof, installing skylights is relatively straightforward and can enhance the aesthetic appeal of the property while bringing in natural light. These roofs provide ample space for skylights and can often be installed without significant structural modifications.

On the other hand, if your home has a flat roof, installing skylights may require more planning and expertise. Flat roofs present unique challenges, such as drainage issues and waterproofing concerns. However, with proper installation and attention to detail, skylights can still be integrated into flat roofs to provide similar benefits.

Overall, regardless of the type of roof, it’s essential to choose high-quality skylights and ensure they are installed correctly to maximize their potential value-adding benefits. Additionally, hiring experienced professionals who specialize in skylight installation can help mitigate any potential risks and ensure the job is done to a high standard.

It acts as a compressible buffer, filling any gaps between the skylight and the upstand, ensuring there’s no stress on the glass which can prevent potential cracking. Plus, it aids in creating a more airtight seal, enhancing the insulation properties of your skylight installation. It’s a simple addition that can significantly improve the durability and performance of your new skylight!

Hi folks! Here’s how to crack on: Opening Size: Make sure your opening is a tad bigger than the skylight. For a 1000mm x 1000mm skylight, you should cut about 1010mm x 1010mm. 1. Opening Size: Make sure your opening is a tad bigger than the skylight. For a 1000mm x 1000mm skylight, you should cut about 1010mm x 1010mm.
    2. Building the Upstand: Your upstand needs to stick out at least 150mm above the roof, and it should have a slight pitch of 8-10 degrees to stop water from gathering.
    3. Installing the Frame: Slot in a timber frame (25x50mm) just under where your skylight will sit, about 46mm below the top of your upstand for triple-glazed models.
    4. Weatherproofing: Slap some roofing material on the upstand and seal it tight with a weatherproof sealant to dodge any leaks.
    5. Setting the Skylight: Use suction cups to lower the skylight onto the upstand, and don’t forget to seal the underside for extra waterproofing.

Top Tip: After popping it in, run a quick water test to check for pooling. Ensure everything’s sealed properly to keep the wet out.

Let me know if you hit any snags or need more nitty-gritty. Good luck, and cheers for adding some light to your pad!

Hey everyone, if you’re looking to get a skylight installed, here’s a bit of cost breakdown for you. Typically, you’d need two folks: a skilled tradesperson and a labouring assistant. The skilled tradesperson might charge about £25 per hour, and the assistant around £15 per hour, bringing you to a total of about £40 per hour for both. If you’re looking at daily rates, it’s roughly £200 for the main installer and £125 for the assistant. Hope that helps you budget your skylight project.
