    • Room Size and Function:
      • Residential Rooms: Generally, for a well-lit room, aim for skylights that cover around 5-10% of the room’s floor area. For example, a 200 square foot room might need skylights totaling 10-20 square feet.
      • Commercial Spaces: Larger spaces or areas with specific lighting needs might require more precise calculations based on the use and design specifications.
    • Placement and Spacing:
      • Even Distribution: For even light distribution, consider spacing the skylights evenly across the roof. Avoid clustering them together unless there is a specific architectural or design reason.
      • Room Layout: Consider the layout and use of the space. For instance, a kitchen or living room might benefit from more natural light compared to a hallway or bathroom.
    • Roof Structure and Orientation:
      • Roof Pitch and Type: The type and pitch of the roof can impact the size and number of skylights. Flat roofs might require different skylight types compared to pitched roofs.
      • Sun Path and Orientation: Consider the direction the roof faces. South-facing roofs will receive more direct sunlight, which can influence the number and type of skylights needed.
    • Energy Efficiency and Insulation:
      • Glazing and Insulation: Choose skylights with appropriate glazing and insulation properties to enhance energy efficiency and minimize heat loss or gain.
    • Building Codes and Regulations:
      • Local Codes: Always check local building codes and regulations. There might be specific requirements or limitations on the number and size of skylights you can install.

There’s something special about basking in natural light and stargazing right from bed. If you’re building new, adding skylights really doesn’t bump up the cost much. Just make sure to opt for low-E glass to enhance energy efficiency.

    1. Opening Size: Make sure your opening is a tad bigger than the skylight. For a 1000mm x 1000mm skylight, you should cut about 1010mm x 1010mm.
    2. Building the Upstand: Your upstand needs to stick out at least 150mm above the roof, and it should have a slight pitch of 8-10 degrees to stop water from gathering.
    3. Installing the Frame: Slot in a timber frame (25x50mm) just under where your skylight will sit, about 46mm below the top of your upstand for triple-glazed models.
    4. Weatherproofing: Slap some roofing material on the upstand and seal it tight with a weatherproof sealant to dodge any leaks.
    5. Setting the Skylight: Use suction cups to lower the skylight onto the upstand, and don’t forget to seal the underside for extra waterproofing.

Top Tip: After popping it in, run a quick water test to check for pooling. Ensure everything’s sealed properly to keep the wet out.

Let me know if you hit any snags or need more nitty-gritty. Good luck, and cheers for adding some light to your pad!

Added an answer on May 10, 2024 at 1:45 pm

Hey folks, for inside cleaning, I stick to a simple mix of dish soap and warm water. Apply it with a soft sponge, scrub gently, and then give it a good wipe down with a microfiber cloth. For those hard-to-reach spots, I use an extension pole with a squeegee attached. Works like a charm every time!

It’s crucial to start by checking your local building regulations to keep everything above board. Next, make sure you’ve got all your gear ready—like your drill, sealant, and safety kit. Also, a good look at your roof’s condition can save you a headache later. It’s gotta be up to snuff to handle the skylight’s weight.

When you’re figuring out where to place it, think about what rooms could really do with that extra splash of sunlight. And remember, placement on the roof matters for getting the best light and making sure the water drains off properly.

Cutting the hole is the bit where you need to measure twice and cut once, as my old mentor used to say. Once that’s done, getting the flashing right will make or break your waterproofing, so don’t skimp on quality sealant and make sure those flashings overlap well to keep the water out.

Lastly, chuck some decent insulation around it and seal up the edges to stop any drafts or leaks. Give it a good water test to make sure you’re not going to have any surprises when the rain comes. Trust me, taking your time to get it right means you won’t have to scramble to fix leaks later! Cheers!

Installing a frameless skylight involves careful planning and execution since it requires precise handling of materials and an understanding of structural integration with your building’s roof. Here’s a general guide to installing a frameless skylight:

    1. Planning and Preparation

    • Design and Location: Decide where the skylight will be installed. Consider factors like sun exposure, roof structure, and interior aesthetics.
    • Permits: Check with your local building authority to see if you need a permit for the installation.
    • Materials: Purchase a frameless skylight kit that fits your needs. These typically include the glass, mounting hardware, and sealants.
    • Tools Needed: Gather necessary tools such as drills, screws, sealant guns, levels, and safety equipment like gloves and goggles.

    2. Roof Preparation

    • Access the Roof: Ensure safe access to your roof using ladders or scaffolding.
    • Locate Rafters: Use a stud finder to locate rafters where the skylight will be mounted.
    • Cutting the Opening: Mark the dimensions of the skylight on the roof. Use a circular saw or reciprocating saw to cut through the roofing material and sheathing. Make sure the opening is clean and matches the dimensions needed for your skylight.

    3. Frame Installation

    • Install the Frame: If your skylight has any framing elements or a mounting kit, install these according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure that the frame is level and securely fastened to the roof structure.
    • Waterproofing: Apply a waterproof membrane around the edges of the frame. This can include roofing tar, rubber membranes, or other recommended sealants to prevent water ingress.

    4. Placing the Glass

    • Mounting the Glass: Carefully lift the glass pane into place. This step often requires multiple people or special lifting equipment due to the weight and fragility of the glass.
    • Sealing: Secure the glass to the frame or directly to the roof, depending on the design of your skylight. Use high-quality sealants to ensure a watertight seal around all edges.
    • Inspecting the Seal: Check for any gaps and apply additional sealant as needed.

    5. Finishing Touches

    • Interior Finish: From the inside, ensure that the transition between the ceiling and the skylight is smooth and finished. You might need to patch or paint the interior drywall.
    • Clean Up: Remove any debris, dust, and tools from the roof and inside the house.

    6. Professional Inspection

    • Safety and Compliance Check: It is advisable to have a professional inspect the installation to ensure that it meets local building codes and is safely installed.

    Additional Tips:

    • Safety First: Always prioritize safety when working at heights. Use proper fall protection systems.
    • Professional Help: If you’re not experienced in construction or roofing, consider hiring a professional. Installing a skylight can be complex and requires precision to avoid leaks and ensure structural integrity.
