I often get asked this question by clients. Well, in this case, I will even answer it myself and I hope that another colleague will correct me if I am wrong!

This is what is important to consider:

    • Room Size and Function:
      • Residential Rooms: Generally, for a well-lit room, aim for skylights that cover around 5-10% of the room’s floor area. For example, a 200 square foot room might need skylights totaling 10-20 square feet.
      • Commercial Spaces: Larger spaces or areas with specific lighting needs might require more precise calculations based on the use and design specifications.
    • Placement and Spacing:
      • Even Distribution: For even light distribution, consider spacing the skylights evenly across the roof. Avoid clustering them together unless there is a specific architectural or design reason.
      • Room Layout: Consider the layout and use of the space. For instance, a kitchen or living room might benefit from more natural light compared to a hallway or bathroom.
    • Roof Structure and Orientation:
      • Roof Pitch and Type: The type and pitch of the roof can impact the size and number of skylights. Flat roofs might require different skylight types compared to pitched roofs.
      • Sun Path and Orientation: Consider the direction the roof faces. South-facing roofs will receive more direct sunlight, which can influence the number and type of skylights needed.
    • Energy Efficiency and Insulation:
      • Glazing and Insulation: Choose skylights with appropriate glazing and insulation properties to enhance energy efficiency and minimize heat loss or gain.
    • Building Codes and Regulations:
      • Local Codes: Always check local building codes and regulations. There might be specific requirements or limitations on the number and size of skylights you can install.
